SUMMARY:Coming to Attention\, The Path of Mind Training & Tonglen
DESCRIPTION:Those who desire shelter quickly \nFor themselves and for all others \nShould use this sacred mystery: \nThe exchange of self and other.  \n~ Shantideva \n  \nThe tradition of Mind Training—the essence of bodhisattva training—is a complete path for overcoming confusion resultant suffering. Accepting us as we are and where we find ourselves\, the practices of Mind Training offer us powerful means for training in compassion and wisdom in the context of our daily lives. \nCentral to this path is the practice of tonglen\, sending and taking\, which is a powerful tool for overcoming our most entrenched habits of attachment and aversion\, helping us to open our hearts to others. By learning to compassionately lean into our own suffering and the suffering of others\, we discover our limitless strength and courage and a new way to relate with the world. By offering our gifts freely\, we unlock the limitless generosity of loving-kindness and awaken to the refuge of experiencing love and compassion with every breath. \nJoin Lama Eric Triebelhorn\, and Tim Campbell as we explore the living lineage of the Mind Training teachings. On this weekend we will delve into the relative bodhichitta practices of guru yoga\, the four thoughts that turn the mind to dharma\, the four immeasurables\, and sending and taking\, as well as the ultimate bodhichitta practices of approaching the nature of mind. \nThere are in-person and Zoom options for this retreat\, and there are no prerequisites.  The retreat will be held at our Portland center\, in Portland\, OR\, August 8th & 9th. \nSchedule Each Day\n9:00am-12:00pm with breaks\nBrown Bag Lunch\n1:30pm-4:30pm with breaks \nIf you would like to read in the Mind Training tradition\, some options are The Art of Transforming the Mind\, by B. Alan Wallace\, The Practice of Lojong\, by Traleg Kyabgon\, Start Where You Are\, by Pema Chodron\, and Training in Compassion\, by Norman Fischer. It is not necessary to buy or read these to participate. \nREGISTER \n \n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://staging2.kcc.org/event/coming-to-attention-the-path-of-mind-training-tonglen/

SUMMARY:Milarepa Guru Yoga and Ritual Feast
DESCRIPTION:Kyabje Bokar Rinpoche was the principal teacher of Lama Eric and many others at KCC. He passed from this world rather suddenly on August 17\, 2004. The anniversary of such masters is considered a good occasion to recall their kindness\, make offerings\, and engage in dharma practice. \nThis year\, August 17th falls on a Sunday. We will gather for our regular 9:00am meditation and discussion\, however\, we will end this gathering 10:30am to set up for Milarepa Guru Yoga. This will begin at 11:00am and finish by 12:30pm. There will be some simple food afterwards. \nYou do not need an empowerment to do this practice as a celebration. All are welcome\, and there will be concise instructions to help you meaningfully engage in the session. There is no cost for the event\, but if you like\, you can donate to KCC whatever you like on this auspicious day. \nLet Lama Eric know if you would like to contribute to the ritual feast by email at trinle.thaye@gmail.com. \nTo join via Zoom: This session continues on from the morning shamatha practice\, so if you attended earlier\, there’s no need to switch Zoom streams. \nIf you did not attend for the morning shamatha practice\, a red “Connect to Zoom” button will appear near the bottom of this event page 15 minutes prior to the session (Sunday at 10:45am). Please refresh your window if it is not appearing. If you are still having trouble\, please email zoom@kcc.org for assistance.\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://staging2.kcc.org/event/milarepa-guru-yoga-and-ritual-feast/

SUMMARY:BOOK GROUP—Joyfully Just: Black Wisdom and Buddhist Insights for Liberated Living
DESCRIPTION:KCC Book Group meets the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the month.\n\n9:30 to 11:00 a.m. at KCC Portland Center (No Zoom)\nEveryone is welcome\nContact Cynthia@kcc.org if you have questions or would like to attend.\n\n\nMeets in person at the Portland Center to discuss the book Joyfully Just: Black Wisdom and Buddhist Insights for Liberated Living by Dr. Kamilah Majied.\n\n\n\nBuddhist practices for joy and justice\nJoyfully Just: Black Wisdom and Buddhist Insights for Liberated Living \nWhen the world feels cracked open\, it becomes apparent that we take false refuge regularly. Working with a book grounded in Buddhist theory and practice allows us to find true refuge. \n“The goal of this book is simple – to reclaim joy by using meditative practices to be just toward ourselves and the world around us…As we begin to see and face…all that we could not see and face before\, we become more free and thus more joyful. In Buddhism\, emancipation from delusion is itself enlightenment…Enlightenment comes from seeing the truth.” \n“I define meditative…practices as the activities we engage in to bring ourselves to the present moment in a way that reflects an embodied and integrated experience of our own minds\, hearts\, and bodies. True mindful or contemplative practice strengthens our compassion…” \n“Pause and look at the suffering that injustice has caused…in that pause we can experience the joy of clarity\, which is a precursor to the joy of healing… Our spirits\, bodies and minds need to be buoyant to navigate the unceasing waves…” \n“Community is one of our biggest resources!” \nWe meet the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the month\, from 9:30 till 11:00. This book is available for purchase at KCC. For our first meeting\, please read the introduction. \nIn person only. If you have questions\, email Cynthia@kcc.org\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://staging2.kcc.org/event/book-group-joyfully-just/2025-08-19/

SUMMARY:KCC Movie Night: The Dalai Lama's Gift
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special screening of The Dalai Lama’s Gift\, a powerful visual account of a magical moment in the history of Buddhism in America. \nWe’re thrilled to announce that director Ed Bastian will be sharing the finished cut of his film with us. He’ll kick things off with a personal welcome\, and after the screening\, he’ll join us live via Zoom for an interactive Q&A session. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to engage directly with the filmmaker behind the lens. \nThis event is open to all\, and we warmly welcome your presence. If you feel moved to support the offering\, we invite you to give Dana—a heartfelt gesture of appreciation. A suggested contribution of $5 helps sustain events like this. \nThe documentary explores the story of the Kalachakra initiation given by His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Wisconsin in the 1980s\, a sacred tantric ritual never before performed outside of India or Tibet. What preceded was a remarkable journey: the building of a temple\, the overcoming of local resistance\,\nand the blossoming of spiritual community. \nOriginally filmed during the event\, the footage was stored in the Smithsonian vaults for over 40 years. Now restored and reassembled\, it offers a cinematic meditation on faith\, resilience\, and cultural transformation. \nLet’s gather\, learn\, and reflect together. We look forward to seeing you there! \nFor more about the movie\, visit the website here. \n \nTo attend from home: Use the Zoom button that appears below 15 minutes prior to the session (at 6:45pm). If the button is not appearing\, first try refreshing your webpage. If it is still not appearing\, please email zoom@kcc.org for assistance.\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://staging2.kcc.org/event/kcc-movie-night-the-dalai-lamas-gift/
