SUMMARY:Living the Wisdom of Lojong: A Course in Applied Mind Training
DESCRIPTION:This group offers an opportunity to explore the classic Buddhist teachings known as Lojong\, or “mind training.” These teachings are organized into short\, memorable sayings\, called aphorisms\, that serve as practical reminders for cultivating compassion\, resilience\, and wisdom in everyday life. Whether you are continuing on from 2025’s Mind Training: Foundational Texts Review\, or joining us for the first time\, you’ll be warmly welcomed. \nIn this new cycle\, we’ll place special emphasis on practice and integration. The usual 18‑month curriculum\, led by Tim Campbell\, has been condensed into an 8-month course\, allowing us to focus deeply on the core aphorisms from Points 1 and 2\, which establish the foundations of mind training\, while also engaging with key selections from Points 3–7. \nTogether\, we’ll reflect\, discuss\, and apply these aphorisms\, bringing their wisdom into the challenges and opportunities of modern life. \nLogistics & Schedule \nWhen: Every 2nd and 4th Thursday\nTime: 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM\nWhere: Hybrid format—in-person at KCC and on Zoom.\nText: Training In Compassion\, by Norman Fischer \nThe Heart of the Practice \nAs the poet David Whyte reminds us\, “There’s a small opening at the beginning of each day that closes the moment you begin your plans. What you can plan is too small for what you can live.” In that spirit\, we’ll keep our structure focused but flexible\, while staying centered on practice. \nBefore the first class\, we will send out your initial reading assignment. The subsequent bi-weekly rhythm will follow this pattern: \n\n2nd Thursday Class (Practice Initiation): We will come together to explore the questions and insights from the previous two weeks of study. The core focus will be to understand\, “What is the practice?” We will then engage in the active practice of the specific aphorism\, committing ourselves to it for the next two weeks.\nBetween Classes (Two Weeks): Participants engage in the committed\, real-world practice of the aphorism.\n4th Thursday Class (Review & Introduction): We will review our practice efforts\, dialog about any issues or questions that arose\, and refine our engagement. We will then introduce the reading assignment and contemplation theme for the next two-week cycle.\n\nThis practice-focused cycle ensures we are using the aphorisms not just as philosophy\, but as tools for transformation. We invite both continuing participants and newcomers to join us in this journey of practice and discovery and hope to see you there! \n  \nREGISTER HERE\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://staging2.kcc.org/event/mind-training-group-living-the-wisdom-of-lojong-3/2026-04-09/

SUMMARY:The Essence of Meditation: Letting Go Into Being
DESCRIPTION:In-person and over Zoom \nNever done a meditation retreat before?\nFeel like you need a sanity break?\nNeed some inspiration for your meditation? \nThis weekend retreat—from Friday evening till Monday lunch—can serve any of these purposes and more. So much of our unease\, self-criticism\, despondency\, or stress is caused by thoughts and patterns of thinking that we are often barely aware of. Meditation is about becoming increasingly familiar with the essence of our being—that which lies beneath all fleeting experiences and is a source of inherent well-being. \nJust extracting ourselves from the busyness of our daily lives to spend contemplative time at our spacious\, quiet\, and nurturing retreat land for a weekend does us good. Combine that with gentle and repeated opportunities to become more familiar with the essence of our being through guided meditation and we have something even more meaningful! This retreat is an opportunity to engage more deeply in this process and can equally serve as an introduction to or as an infusion of inspiration for this path of discovery. \nWhat can you expect to gain from this weekend? \n\nAn experiential understanding of the benefits of meditation through guided sessions\, with plenty of stretch breaks\nThe opportunity to experiment with several types of meditation\, some related to developing spacious calm and some focused on opening the heart\nParticipation in question and discussion periods to learn from the teacher and peers\nConfidence in how to bring a regular meditation practice into your life.\n\nSample Schedule \nAM\n6:30-7:30 Meditation\n7:30-9:00 Breakfast Break\n9:00-10:30 Meditation and Teaching\n10:30-11:00 Tea Break\n11:00-12:00 Meditation \nPM\n12:00-2:30 Lunch Break\n2:30-4:00 Meditation and Discussion\n4:00-4:30 Tea Break\n4:30-5:30 Meditation\n5:30-7:00 Dinner Break\n7:00-7:45 Aspiration Prayers and Inspirational Song \nVegetarian meals will be provided. The meal breaks will be spacious. And we will all perform assigned tasks to contribute to the retreat experience. \nLooking forward to being with you there! \nBy signing up you are agreeing to participate in the retreat from beginning to end. This is important to create a cohesive and supportive environment for all. \n  \nREGISTER FOR IN-PERSON \nREGISTER FOR OVER ZOOM \n  \nFinancial Assistance: Financial Assistance (up to 50% of the retreat cost) may be available for individuals with financial constraints. The amount of FA available depends entirely on donations to the Financial Assistance Fund. For those who can afford it\, please consider contributing to the Financial Assistance Fund so that others who are less financially fortunate are able to attend KCC retreats. \nTo apply for Financial Assistance\, contact the Financial Assistance Team at KCC-FA@kcc.org with details of your request. After you have received confirmation\, then register for the retreat. For further details\, read the KCC Financial Assistance Policy here.\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://staging2.kcc.org/event/the-essence-of-meditation-letting-go-into-being-2/

SUMMARY:Children's Program
DESCRIPTION:The KCC Children’s Program is an opportunity to introduce children to Buddhist values within a supportive\, sincere dharma community using simple dharma activities\, storytelling\, open discussion\, songs\, art projects and activities\, including play\, to promote kindness and compassion. Our goal is to provide a fun\, meaningful experience for all. \nSunday Morning Children’s Program \nOn the second and fourth Sundays of each month\, from 9:00 to 11:00 am\, we offer the Sunday Morning Children’s Program. This program normally starts in September and runs through the second Sunday in June. In July and August we meet once a month on the fourth Sunday. We require that at least one parent or guardian be present at KCC when their child attends. \nThe age range we currently serve is 5 to 12; however\, we do allow slightly younger and older children on a case by case basis as appropriate. Please feel free to discuss this with the program coordinator if needed. \nWhile there is no fee for the program\, dana (offerings) are accepted and go towards helping us continue providing programs such as these. In order to support the program on Sundays we ask that parents agree to be available to assist the teacher if needed – this is a shared role and can be filled by parents or other adults who wish to participate in this way. During the regular school year please note that we request you consider committing to bringing your child both Sundays each month throughout this time frame\, but this is not required. \nAlso please be aware that\, to attend this program\, your child needs to be able to manage their speech and physical activity cooperatively in a small group to help maintain a peaceful children’s sangha. If this is a concern we ask that you attend with your child until they are comfortable with the group. Ultimately we want to be as inclusive as possible\, but must also work to create a safe and welcoming environment for all attending. \nChildcare for Children Under Five \nWe also offer childcare for children 3 to 4 years old on the Sunday mornings when the program is offered.\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://staging2.kcc.org/event/childrens-program-2/2026-04-12/

SUMMARY:Moonbeams of Mahamudra Course
DESCRIPTION:Exclusively over Zoom\, third Saturdays from January through May 2026 at 10:00 AM Pacific time. \nRegistration is closed. \nAs part of opening KCC’s 50th anniversary year\, we are delighted to invite Elizabeth Callahan to lead us in five sessions of teaching\, meditation\, and discussion on mahamudra shamatha. This is sure to be a deeply beneficial and inspirational series\, and we hope that many of you partake in it! \nMahamudra shamatha establishes the space in which we behold the nature of mind. This program will explore these instructions as presented in Dakpo Tashi Namgyal’s Moonbeams of Mahamudra\, an early comprehensive work in this tradition. The guidance presented therein reflects the Dakpo Kagyu shamatha meditation: resting quietly in nonconceptuality with the sharp clarity of mindfulness and alertness. \nThe primary focus of this series of classes and discussion groups will be to support and deepen our personal practice of mahamudra shamatha. Preparation for each session will include a reading in Moonbeams of Mahamudra. \nEach class will include an introductory talk\, guided meditation\, and breakout group discussions. \nBetween the monthly classes\, it is expected that participants will spend some time practicing the specific shamatha instructions. Lama Eric will hold a discussion group on the first Saturday of each month to allow for more guided practice and conversation around the teachings. \nRequired text: Moonbeams of Mahamudra (if not using this link\, be sure to purchase Elizabeth’s newer translation of the text.) Discounted copies of the text can be purchased from KCC’s bookstore. \nWe ask participants commit to attending the sessions led by Elizabeth Callahan. Review sessions with Lama Eric are optional\, but we strongly encourage participation. \nElizabeth Callahan began her contemplative training and Tibetan studies in 1977 and completed two three-year retreats at Kagyu Thubten Chöling\, New York\, under the direction of Kalu Rinpoche. She is a student of Khenpo Tsültrim Gyamtso Rinpoche and has translated key texts of the Kagyu tradition\, including Mahamudra: Ocean of Definitive Meaning\, Profound Inner Principles\, Moonbeams of Mahamudra and\, most recently\, Treasury of Precious Instructions\, Marpa Kagyu. She has been a Tsadra Foundation Fellow since 2002 and is a director of Marpa Foundation. \nHaving completed the translations of two of the most influential works on Mahamudra in the Kagyu tradition\, Elizabeth’s willingness to lead study and practice groups on shamatha and vipashyana over the past several years has been met with deep gratitude and appreciation.\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://staging2.kcc.org/event/mahamudra-shamatha-class-2/2026-04-18/

SUMMARY:Living the Wisdom of Lojong: A Course in Applied Mind Training
DESCRIPTION:This course offers an opportunity to explore the classic Buddhist teachings known as Lojong\, or “mind training.” These teachings are organized into short\, memorable sayings\, called aphorisms\, that serve as practical reminders for cultivating compassion\, resilience\, and wisdom in everyday life. Whether you are continuing on from 2025’s Mind Training: Foundational Texts Review\, or joining us for the first time\, you’ll be warmly welcomed. \nThis round of classes will cover a large number of the aphorisms from the classic Seven-Point Mind Training teachings\, placing special emphasis on practice and integration. \n  \nREGISTER HERE \n  \nThis course is offered on a sliding scale to honor diverse circumstances. Participation is open to all\, regardless of financial means. We ask that everyone register\, and those with the ability to contribute more are warmly invited to do so\, supporting the sustainability of our programs.\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://staging2.kcc.org/event/mind-training-group-living-the-wisdom-of-lojong-2-2/2026-04-23/
