Fun for Families: Bug Hotel and Garden Project

April 18, 2021, 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Teacher: Mary Woods/Amy Vance

This is an in-person event outdoors at our Portland Center. Masks will be worn with social distancing.

We are planning an outdoor get together at KCC for any kids (toddlers to teens) and their families on April 18th at 2 PM to make a Bug Hotel and also work on the garden area designated for the children! Amy Vance is going to lead us in these activities which should be a lot of fun for both the children and the grownups who accompany them.

Any adults with children in their lives are welcome to bring these young people and the only requirement for this activity is that children are supervised by the grownups who bring them. Below s a little more about this project and what to bring if you wish to contribute:

From Amy Vance:
The Bodhisattva Bug Out Motel and Lounge (actual bug motel will be named by the children) will help increase biodiversity, house pollinators, provide natural pest control, improve soil fertility, and help the garden come alive. The hope is to attract Ladybugs, Mason Bees, Beetles, Lace Wings, Moths and solitary bees.

Your family can contribute by bringing bug house habitats like pine cones, bamboo, sticks, broken pieces of clay pots, short logs with holes drilled in the ends, and tubes for mason bees (other ideas are online). Small clay pots could also be put in sideways for planting some vertical plants in with the bug materials. We have bricks at KCC already.

While one family works on the hotel other families can help plant in the KCC gardens. Anyone who has extra strawberries please gift them to this event as the youngsters have expressed interest in planting strawberries in the children’s garden.
