Awakening to Whiteness

December 3, 2021

[It is not too late to sign up for this course. If you missed the live online orientation, ZCO offers a video recording which explains the process. A link to learn more and to register is below.]

KCC approached Zen Community of Oregon (ZCO) to inquire about a cohort of KCC members participating in their program “Awakening to Whiteness,” and they are graciously accommodating us. Subtitled “Using the Dharma to Dismantle Oppression,” this six-month curriculum with monthly meetings explores the elements that have contributed to our often unconscious identity as white. It proceeds from the understanding that our own liberation is intimately bound to that of others.

The course offers a variety of readings intended to spark reflection on our personal experiences with this topic. Meetings begin in a large group, but most of the program centers around discussions held in small groups that remain together for the duration of the program. Participants can choose to be put in a small group with other KCC members; Lama Eric will be joining this group.

This program is offered virtually, beginning Sunday, January 23rd, 3:30 to 5:30pm. Before signing up for the full course, you are encouraged to attend a virtual orientation on Sunday, December 12 (3:30 to 5:30pm). In this way, you will get a better understanding of the structure and guidelines around these personal conversations before making the commitment to monthly meetings.

To sign up for the orientation, go to: Zendust: Awakening to Whiteness using the Dharma to Dismantle oppression. While it is best to attend the orientation, if this date cannot work for you, ZCO offers a video recording which explains the process.
